About
For some time I have had the idea of a giant windup car. Small windup toys are extremely popular but there are not many options for larger ones. I originally had the idea of making a racing car with large rear wheels made out of tuna cans that would zoom off when released. After a bit of tinkering and rework I ended up with my first prototype which I might add still works! Here it is powering over a tin of lentils!
I've tried to introduce some basic form of mechanics into each toy, with the idea to inspire the child to figure out how the mechanism operates and perhaps use that knowledge to identify similar mechanisms in everyday life. Whilst the Windup and Driver may appear complex the principles are basic mechanics and physics. The Windup consists of a series of pulleys configured to release the stored energy in the rubber bands over a longer period of time, ensuring a smooth acceleration and longer run. The Driver simply uses the string to steer the wheels in the same direction as the steering wheel.
Wherever you are, children's primary needs are food, love and play. The third is what I'm trying to give with a little hint of inspiration into mechanics and zest for how things work.
